What is a “retrofit”?

A retrofit project consists of implementing energy efficiency measures to reduce a facility’s energy consumption. Investment in energy efficiency measures generates returns through energy bill savings. These measures typically focus on:

  • Installation and optimization of existing cooling equipment (e.g. thermostats, pumps, variable frequency drivers)
  • Building envelope (e.g. window shading, wall insulation, window double glazing)
  • Installation of energy efficient lighting (e.g. CFL, LED, metal-halide) and optimization of lighting management systems
  • Building management systems (BMS)

Contracting model

There are two kinds of contract models, a guaranteed savings model and a shared savings approach:

  • The guaranteed savings contract is when the ESCO promises the end-user that a certain amount of savings will occur. The ESCO only receives payment if that promise is upheld.
  • In a shared savings scenario, the ESCO and the end-user split the savings between each other. The ESCO’s portion goes toward paying down the costs associated with the retrofit.

Tarshid follows a shared savings model

Buildings retrofit

Project management and financing

Tarshid manages and funds the upgrade and replacement of energy equipment in buildings and public facilities, on an exclusive basis for government entities and on a competitive basis for commercial ones. We contract ESCOs to execute, operate and maintain retrofit projects, and recoup realized energy savings as a return on our investment.

Tarshid enables building owners to reduce their energy bills and achieve their sustainability objectives without necessarily investing their own capital.

Pure project management

Tarshid provides a broad range of services for clients who wish to fund their own retrofits, which range from:

  • Tendering retrofit projects including the development and issuance of RFPs, ESCO identification and selection, energy savings measures assessment, and overall tendering process management
  • Reviewing and evaluating energy efficiency feasibility studies
  • Offering supervisory support for the execution of energy efficiency measures
  • Providing Measurement and Verification support on an regular basis, to assess and validate actual savings achieved

Streetlights retrofit

Project management and financing

Tarshid develops, manages and delivers a comprehensive program to retrofit streetlights across the Kingdom in coordination with the municipalities, ministries and other development authorities. This program aims to decrease the electric consumption of this sector by average (50-60) % as for now it consumed about 10% of the government sector total consumption,

Also, one the goal of this program is to unify the technical specification of LED fixtures and road classification all over the kingdom to achieve the energy efficiency in street light sector according to the international standard and in co-operation with the related organizations like SEEC and SASO

This ambitious program will cover nearly 2.9 Million street light poles all over the kingdom

This program is fully funded by Tarshid, private sector will be one of the big supporter to this program by providing their latest technology and technical support to achieve the goal of this program

A typical street light project entails two main activities:
  • De-lamping :

Removal of unnecessary lighting fixtures in areas with excessive lighting levels, while maintaining safety

  • Retrofitting :

Replacing inefficient street lights with more efficient lighting systems, such as LED’s

Renewable energy

Project management and financing

Solar thermal and photovoltaic power generation are becoming increasingly cost effective.

To address the challenges of sustainable economic development, Tarshid promotes the development of supply side renewable energy initiatives such as rooftop PV as complementary measures to building retrofits.
