Retrofitting the campus buildings of the Institute of Public Administration in Riyadh.
Challenges
Finding multiple practical solutions to reduce electrical consumption of the campus.
25,600,000
Total electricity consumption before retrofitting
65,000
Total Area
Solutions
Started by carrying out a detailed technical study of all buildings in the institute and then determining the suitable retrofit criteria.
Criteria
- Replacing chillers with more energy efficient ones
- Connecting chillers to the chillers management system
- Improving the efficiency of all Air Handling Units (AUH) and integrating them with the BMS
- Replacing the traditional sodium fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures and installing movement sensors
- Replacing window A/C with energy efficient split A/C
- Replacing the swimming pool water heating system with a solar heating system
- Adding control units to the ventilation fans in the car park area
- Installing CO2 sensors in the car park area
Results
- Achieving energy saving close to 50% of the previous total annual consumption
- Avoiding 6,000 tons of harmful carbon emissions
- Equivalent to growing 30,500 seedlings annually
