Retrofitting the campus buildings of Imam Mohammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh.
Challenges
Finding multiple practical solutions to reduce electrical consumption of the campus.
229,000,000
Total electricity consumption before retrofitting
4,400,000
Total Area
Solutions
Started by carrying out a detailed technical study of all buildings in the campus and then determining the suitable retrofit criteria.
Criteria
- Installation of regulation devices for Air Handling Units (AHU)
- Installation of control systems for the management devices of the refrigeration plant
- Installing devices with variable speeds that control the chilled water pumps
- Replacing refrigeration equipment
- Replace generators of cooled water pumps with modern ones
- Replacing and retrofit the cooling towers with higher efficiency systems
- Replacing the traditional sodium fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures
Results
- Achieving energy saving close to 50% of the previous total annual consumption
- Averting 65,000 tons of harmful carbon emissions
- Equivalent to Growing 1,000,000 seedlings annually
