The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) and King Abdullah Medical City, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, have launched an energy retrofitting project for 16 of the city's facilities and buildings. This initiative aligns with international best practices to increase energy efficiency and reduce consumption.
Commenting on the project's details, Waleed Al-Ghreri, a Board Member and the CEO of Tarshid, stated that the company had conducted field surveys and technical studies on the buildings and facilities within the project's scope. These revealed the importance of applying ten key measures, including control, air conditioning, and lighting systems, such as developing a chiller control system, scheduling air handling units, and installing variable frequency drives to optimize their performance.
Additionally, some cooling water pumps will be replaced with energy-efficient alternatives, and the building management system will be upgraded and integrated with the new cooling and air conditioning devices to increase operational efficiency. The lighting systems will also be retrofitted by replacing existing conventional lighting with high-performance, energy-efficient LED systems complemented by occupancy sensors and smart motion detectors.
The project targets an annual electricity consumption of approximately 47 million kWh. After completing the retrofit works, the consumption is expected to decrease to about 37 million kWh, with an estimated annual energy savings of 23%. These addressed savings equate to preserving more than 17,000 barrels of oil equivalent annually and avoiding approximately 6,000 metric tons of harmful carbon emissions. This environmental impact is equivalent to the effect of planting over 102,000 tree seedlings annually.
The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) was launched in 2017 as the leading energy services company in the Kingdom. The company supports the energy sector and promotes sustainability by integrating energy efficiency, operational efficiency, and clean energy. Tarshid's mission aligns with the Kingdom's strategic sustainability goals derived from Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to achieve significant energy savings and reduce carbon emissions.
