Under the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy and Chairman of the National Energy Services Company (Tarshid); (Tarshid), through one of its subsidiaries, has signed a cooperation agreement with Jeddah Airports Company, the operator of King Abdulaziz International Airport, to provide sustainable and energy efficiency solutions for the airport’s buildings and facilities. King Abdulaziz International Airport, recognized as one of the world’s top 100 airports, recently ranked third in the Middle East according to Skytrax rankings.
The agreement aims to implement energy efficiency measures and launch innovative initiatives to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and promote sustainability. This collaboration supports the Saudi Aviation Sustainability Program and contributes to achieving the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030 objectives of increasing energy efficiency and fostering sustainable solutions in public and private buildings across the Kingdom. As part of the agreement, Tarshid will conduct field surveys and technical studies for the targeted buildings and facilities at King Abdulaziz International Airport, and will propose optimal solutions for energy conservation and efficiency improvements within the project scope.
Commenting on the agreement, Mr. Waled Abdullah Al-Ghreri, Member of the Board of Directors and CEO of Tarshid, stated “We are dedicated to realizing Vision 2030’s goals of increasing energy efficiency and promoting sustainability in the Kingdom. Tarshid continues to strengthen partnerships with both the public and private sectors. Our collaboration with Jeddah Airports Company is a pivotal step toward setting new benchmarks for energy efficiency in the aviation sector, reflecting a future of operational excellence combined with environmental responsibility.”
Eng. Mazen Mohammed Johar, CEO of Jeddah Airports Company, emphasized that the agreement is a significant step toward enhancing the operational efficiency of airport facilities. He stated that this aligns with the national aviation strategy to implement global standards for sustainable, high-efficiency airport operations in line with Vision 2030 goals. Eng. Johar further highlighted the airport's notable progress in environmental preservation, citing several sustainability projects, such as a recycling program that reduces carbon emissions and promotes net-zero targets, electricity and water conservation initiatives using solar panels and smart technologies, air quality monitoring indicators in partnership with the National Center for Environmental Compliance, and expanding green spaces to lower carbon emissions at the airport.
It is worth noting that Tarshid focuses on retrofitting buildings and facilities to increase energy efficiency and promote sustainability across public and private sectors. The King Abdulaziz International Airport project is one of Tarshid’s significant collaborations with the private sector, aimed at encouraging the aviation industry to adopt environmentally sustainable practices.
Since its establishment in 2017, Tarshid has been at the forefront of driving strategic sustainability objectives in the Kingdom, derived from Vision 2030. The company has achieved annual energy savings of 7.3 terawatt-hours by the end of Q3 2024 across its various projects. These savings are equivalent to preserving over 11.7 million barrels of oil and reducing approximately 4.2 million metric tons of harmful emissions — an environmental impact comparable to planting over 69.4 million tree seedlings annually.
